What is the Baroque? Where did it come from and where did it go? Why do we have to ask these questions? Because art historians seem largely satisfied with their answers and most scholars of German literature are not satisfied, yet have stopped asking. This book discerns in the Baroque an aesthetic phenomenon that crosses both media and national boundaries in its celebration of excess and its disintegration of system, unity, and identity. The compositional principles and theoretical implications of the Baroque, as it first arose in Italian art, find expression in German poetics, drama, poetry, and narrative - expression accessible only through resolute close reading. Readings of Bernini, Borromini, Velazquez, Rubens, Fracanzano, and de Hooch precipitate readings of Opitz, Gryphius, Fleming, Zesen, Hoffmannswaldau, and Grimmelshausen, demonstrating that seventeenth-century German literature both is Baroque and confirms what the Baroque is.

Theology is an explication, im-plication, and com-plication of the Christian perception of truth and value. The occurrence of this perception takes place in following the story of the Gospel, which remains open and organic, unable to be closed. Every formation of a closed system has to be exceeded on the way to a post-systematic theology.The first part of this work deals with redefining basic concepts from a phenomenological perspective and from within a narrative ontology. Key terms such as relation, way-formational line, event, time, space, sign, metaphor, concept, name, model, theory, coherence, causality, contingence, subject, and truth, are explored and reworked. The main portion of the work delves into the threefold self-presentation of God in the perception of truth and value as displayed in the Gospel. The work concludes by taking up the consequences of the relationship between faith and religion, historicity and Holy Scripture, the concept of rationality, as well as the inter-disciplinary and academic study of theology.

Das Engelmann-Skizzenbuch ermöglicht einen Einblick in die Entstehung von zwei der bekanntesten Werke Ludwig van Beethovens: Es dokumentiert Beethovens letzte Arbeiten an den Diabelli-Variationen und enthält frühe Skizzen zur Neunten Symphonie. Das Skizzenbuch wird hier erstmals vollständig in Transkription vorgelegt. Die enthaltenen Skizzen werden bestimmten Werken und Werkabschnitten zugeordnet und analysiert. Zudem konnten durch die Untersuchung der Schreibprozesse neue Erkenntnisse über Beethovens Arbeitsorganisation und seine Schreibstrategien gewonnen werden. Dies wird durch neue Forschungen zur Provenienz des Skizzenbuchs ergänzt: Wie zuvor nicht bekannt, beschäftigte sich bereits Johannes Brahms mit diesem Skizzenbuch.
