Restoration artist Rosa Patton Ragan spent 20 years, from 1983 to 2003, restoring the Dentzel menagerie carousel in Glen Echo, MD. The full story of her work is now captured in Restoring the Glen Echo Park Carousel by Deborah Lange, with over 500 beautiful full-color photographs showing the methods Rosa used on the animals, chariots, drum panels, ceiling panels, rounding boards, and band organ. Her methods are carefully explained, with detailed descriptions of how she finds original colors, removes park paint, makes repairs, cleans the animals, traces designs, protects the original paint, applies leaf, paints the animals, applies pin striping and designs, and applies a finish coat. The inpainting methods she uses on the drum panels and ceiling panels are also fully described, as are the bronze powder methods she uses on the Wurlitzer band organ. Also included is a chapter on repair techniques, which describes filling voids, tightening seams, and shaping and attaching new pieces, and a chapter on painting techniques, which covers surface preparation, leafing, glazing, bronzing, blending, creating dapples, pin striping, varnishing, and other topics. A complete materials list and photographic catalog of all finished animals and chariots makes this book an excellent aid for anyone considering a restoration. This book, however, is more than a restorer's guide. It is written for the general public to explain how a much-loved but abused ride was restored to become once again the magnificent functional art it was when it arrived at the park in 1921. This book is an excellent gift for anyone who loves carousels.

Restoring the Glen Echo Park Carousel

The Rough Road to Statecraft is a window into the formative years of the modern Bulgarian state and the efforts of the Balkan peoples to define themselves politically as the mighty Ottoman Empire ceded power to Europe. The book is a biography of the great Bulgarian statesman and philanthropist Ivan Evstratiev Gueshoff (1849-1924).               In  relating Gueshoff's life, however, it also tells the story of Bulgaria's bloody liberation from Constantinople (Istanbul) in 1878, of many years of brutal domestic debate over the country's character and priorities, and of the Balkan people's increasingly violent struggle—culminating in the Balkan Wars of the early 20th century—to define and defend their heritage and territory.           The engaging and admirable Gueshoff has  much to teach readers with a casual or professional interest in Bulgarian history. But Rough Road also provides fascinating insights into many of the sources of conflict that would eventually lead to the more recent Balkan wars of our own 21st century, and the response of the great western European powers then and now to the troubles brewing on their eastern borders. The rescripted self refers to a person who has achieved both competency and success in life, and who has attained a state of being that is characterized by happiness and wellbeing. Rescripting therapy is my method for achieving this, first by changing the parts that make up the self, and then changing the self as a whole. We will use function-focused rescripting to change the component parts of the self, and integrative-rescripting to change the self as a whole. Competency and wellbeing are the primary goals in life; by rescripting the self we improve our ability to function successfully in life, while also attaining a state of emotional wellbeing and fulfillment.Affects make up the fundamental processes underlying our emotional and psychological life. What we feel when emotional is essentially the physical sensations associated with affects. The rapid heartbeat and labored breathing when scared is that of the affect fear-terror, while the relaxed feeling of calmness is based on the affect enjoyment-joy; in other words, affects make up the physical experiences of an emotion. They are innate neurobiological functions, unlike emotions, which are combinations of both affect and cognition and, rather than being inborn, are based on learned experiences. In other words, affects refer to what some call the "basic" or "inborn" emotions."In general, then, we can say that there are two primary goals in life, the first to function competently in the world, the second to live life with emotional wellbeing. To function competently in life is essential for survival, safety and security; it is also essential for wellbeing. However, just because one functions well does not necessarily mean that one feels well; although affect-regulation is a necessary component for wellbeing, the necessary and essential factor is the integration of the self.
