As every year since 1993, the Yearbook of 'AV Monographs gathers' gathers the best buildings completed in Spain over the past twelve months, taking stock of its characteristic high quality despite the crisis that still affects the field. The year that saw the Pritzker go to the Catalan studio RCR Arquitectes, and the establishment of the Norman Foster Foundation in Madrid, also witnessed important inaugurations like that of the Botín Centre in Santander the first building by Renzo Piano in Spain , the Congress Center in Palma by Francisco Mangado, or the new stadium of Atlético de Madrid in the old Peineta, by Cruz & Ortiz.

It has been one hundred years since the birth of Jørn Utzon (1918-2008), the visionary Dane who was only 38 years old when he won the competition to build the Sydney Opera House. 'AV' marks the occasion covering his legacy in a monograph featuring six canonical works along with six articles by international critics. Richard Weston ponders on the sources of inspiration in Utzon's creative process, Marja-Riitta Norri contributes a Nordic approach to the courtyard houses, Françoise Fromonot recalls the research carried out to write her monograph on the Sydney Opera House, the unbuilt projects are covered by Enrique Sobejano, Kenneth Frampton focuses on Bagsværd Church, and Rafael Moneo, who worked with Utzon in 1961, writes about the two Mallorca houses.

This monograph selects fifteen works completed between 2012 and 2018, that show how, far from letting himself get carried away by media attention after winning the Pritzker in 2011, the Portuguese architect remains anchored to the fundamentals that supported his first projects. Constructive precision, material solidity, topographical rigour, or dialogue with the preexisting still mark works like the pavilion in Viana do Castelo or the facilities by Sete Cidades Lake, the dwellings in Senhora da Luz or the acclaimed chapel for the Vatican, the Casa do Conhecimento or the plant for the Foz Tua Dam, and heritage interventions like the Bernardas Convent or the São Lourenço do Barrocal estate.

The magazine AV Monographs devotes a double issue to David Chipperfield Architects, covering the office's work through a selection of 36 projects developed since 2009. The publication analyses the studio's essential lines of work in five texts by prominent critics and historians. Sebastian Redecke, editor at the German journal Bauwelt, Deyan Sudjic, director of The Design Museum of London, Flora Samuel, British architect and professor, Richard Ingersoll, American critic based in Florence, and finally, Deborah Berke, dean of the Yale School of Architecture. The issue ends with a chapter on the Fundación RIA, in which Luis Fernández-Galiano and David Chipperfield reflect on the architect's role in landscape preservation.

Austrian architects Baumschlager Eberle are the focus of this instalment. The practice, founded in 1985 by Carlo Baumschlager and Dietmar Eberle, has evolved into a global firm comprising eleven offices in countries throughout Europe and Asia. Today it is run by Eberle together with several partners. Academic research and practical experience come together in the architecture of Baumschlager Eberle, which primarily concerns itself with the relationship between density and the atmosphere of cities, as well as the possibility of designing zero-energy buildings. The issue includes a theoretical essay by Eberle, along with extensive profiles of sixteen projects completed since 2000.

Vector Architects, founded by Gong Dong (Beijing, 1972) has become one of the key architectural offices in China. Their work is distinguished by its careful attention to context, a deep respect for landscape and the natural environment, the contemporary reinterpretation of Chinese building traditions, and the conscientious use of natural light as a project tool. With these ingredients the studio envisions and designs intimate and emotional spaces, as those that can be found in the sixteen projects, all of them in China, featured in this monograph. The list includes works like the Alila Yangshuo Hotel, the Seashore Library and Chapel, the Captains House, and the Changjiang Art Museum.
