Sidney Bernstein, born in the Bronx, learned chess from his father at age 7, and played in his first tournament at 15. Since then, he has gone on to play in such prestigious events as the U.S. Championship, the U.S. Open Championship, the World Open, the Marshall and Manhattan Club Championships. (He has been champion of both these clubs). He was designated a member of the U.S. team for the U.S.A.-U.S.S.R. match in 1946, and for the 1952 Olympiad, later captaining the U.S. team in the World Postal Olympiad. He also served as advisor to the U.S. team at the 1964 Olympiad. Mr. Bernstein co-edited (with Fred Reinfeld) the books “Art of Chess” and “Kemeri International Tourney, 1937”. He has been awarded the Life Chess Master title by the U.S. Chess Federation.  This book is his chess biography. It contains 142 of his annotated games against the leading chess players of America and the story behind each game. The games are tactically sharp and in most cases arise from unusual openings, many of which were invented by Sidney Bernstein himself. 44 of his games translated into algebraic notation with diagrams have been added to this edition, some of which were not in the original book.

Activity Recognition in Pervasive Intelligent Environments (Atlantis Ambient and Pervasive Intelligence, 4)

This book consists of a number of chapters addressing different aspects of activity recognition, roughly in three main categories of topics. The first topic will be focused on activity modeling, representation and reasoning using mathematical models, knowledge representation formalisms and AI techniques. The second topic will concentrate on activity recognition methods and algorithms. Apart from traditional methods based on data mining and machine learning, we are particularly interested in novel approaches, such as the ontology-based approach, that facilitate data integration, sharing and automatic/automated processing. In the third topic we intend to cover novel architectures and frameworks for activity recognition, which are scalable and applicable to large scale distributed dynamic environments. In addition, this topic will also include the underpinning technological infrastructure, i.e. tools and APIs, that supports function/capability sharing and reuse, and rapid development and deployment of technological solutions. The fourth category of topic will be dedicated to representative applications of activity recognition in intelligent environments, which address the life cycle of activity recognition and their use for novel functions of the end-user systems with comprehensive implementation, prototyping and evaluation. This will include a wide range of application scenarios, such as smart homes, intelligent conference venues and cars.

This monograph treats normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds, with a focus on noncompactness. These objects generalize hyperbolic fixed points and are ubiquitous in dynamical systems.First, normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds and their relation to hyperbolic fixed points and center manifolds, as well as, overviews of history and methods of proofs are presented. Furthermore, issues (such as uniformity and bounded geometry) arising due to noncompactness are discussed in great detail with examples.The main new result shown is a proof of persistence for noncompact normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds in Riemannian manifolds of bounded geometry. This extends well-known results by Fenichel and Hirsch, Pugh and Shub, and is complementary to noncompactness results in Banach spaces by Bates, Lu and Zeng. Along the way, some new results in bounded geometry are obtained and a framework is developed to analyze ODEs in a differential geometric context.Finally, the main result is extended to time and parameter dependent systems and overflowing invariant manifolds.
