This is one of seven in a series of Preservation Planning Program resource guides. It covers the full range of activities that can be implemented to maintain and improve the conditions of research collections to ensure they will remain useable as long as possible. Section 1 is an introduction that defines the topic and describes the major activities. Section 2 steps through an investigation process that assists library staff in reviewing current practice and the state of activities. Section 3 contains articles, manuals, and other resources that provide an overview and information on standardized procedures and guidelines of good practice to help identify areas for improvement and change. Section 4 contains a selected bibliography of additional materials that provide greater detailed information on specialized aspects of the topic.

Since 2002, when DSpace and other institutional repository (IR) system software began to be available, an increasing number of research libraries and their parent institutions have established institutional repositories to collect and provide access to diverse locally produced digital materials. This emerging technology holds great promise to transform scholarly communication, but it is still in its infancy. This survey is intended to collect baseline data about ARL member institutions' IR activities.

Records management is the field of management responsible for efficient and systematic control of the creation, receipt, maintenance, use, and disposition of the records of a business or organization. There are two reasons for retaining non-current records. First is to satisfy the legal and fiduciary responsibilities of the organization for specific periods of time; second is to permanently retain those records which document the history of the institution. Not all academic or research institutions have a records management program. In those that do, administration of the program may be the responsibility of staff in an archives department, a special collections department or library, a remote shelving facility, or some other unit. This survey explored how many ARL member libraries are responsible for an institutional records management program, what models they follow, what practices they follow, and who pays for records management.
