The title of this book by Dutch artist Lidwien van de Ven is a quote from French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard. A few years after World War II, Godard spoke these words to express his thoughts about the incapacity of art and film to discuss the Holocaust. In her own introverted and intense black-and-white films and photographs, van de Ven concerns herself with ethical matters and questions about what an image can and cannot tell us: about how the visible relates to the invisible, and about the processes of registration, perception, concealing, and revealing.

A collection of hundreds of photos taken by a husband of his wife during the years 1956-1968, In Almost Every Picture is a remarkably consistent group of images, relaxed yet arranged, amateur yet professional, everyday yet unique. At the center of each photograph is the wife, gracefully posed, captured in different places over the years. She ages, her hairstyle changes, likewise her taste in fashion. But if viewers feel that through these pictures they have come to know the photographer and his wife, they are very wrong. The collection of images that appears in In Almost Every Picture was found at a flea market in Spain--if any relatives of the artist or his subject come forward, the photos will be dutifully returned.

How and why do artists customize, sort, organize, and scrutinize archival information? Potential considers the role of the archive in current artistic practice through the work of 11 international artists who engage with archival and documentation processes. Using the archive as a starting point, each artist regards archiving as an ongoing research process in their work, one that may result in a variety of outcomes rather than one fixed object. In presenting and critiquing these different approaches, Potential encourages the questioning of inherited concepts and the consideration of alternative, more flexible and reflexive methods.

Their faces peer out from milk cartons, xeroxes taped to lampposts, small newspaper ads, and flyers sent bulk in the mail. They are people you have never met, people you probably will never meet--but should you happen to come across them, this image is the only visual clue you will have with which to recognize them. They are missing persons. Useful Photography No. 3 presents a series of photographs used to search for persons who have gone missing in the United Kingdom. Some are snapshots or studio portraits, others are passport photos, and often they are the last photos taken of their subject. Their significance and power shifted and grew exponentially when the person they represent disappeared, leaving behind only traces on light sensitive paper. This issue of Useful Photography was completed with the full support of www.missingpersons.org, in the hopes that, perhaps, some of the missing can still be found.
