Sir Leslie Stephen (November 28, 1832-February 22, 1904) was an English author, critic, and mountaineer, and the father of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell. Literary career: While at Cambridge, Stephen became an Anglican clergyman. In 1865, having renounced his religious beliefs, and after a visit to the United States two years earlier, where he had formed lasting friendships with Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., James Russell Lowell, and Charles Eliot Norton, he settled in London and became a journalist, eventually editing the Cornhill Magazine in 1871, where R. L. Stevenson, Thomas Hardy, W. E. Norris, Henry James, and James Payne figured among his contributors. In his spare time, he participated in athletics and mountaineering. He was already known as a climber, as a contributor to Peaks, Passes and Glaciers (1862), and as one of the earliest presidents of the Alpine Club, when in 1871, in commemoration of his own first ascents in the Alps, he published The Playground of Europe, which immediately became a mountaineering classic, drawing - together with Whymper's Scrambles Amongst the Alps - successive generations of its readers to the Alps. Mountaineering: Stephen was one of the most prominent figures in the golden age of alpinism (the period between Wills's ascent of the Wetterhorn in 1854 and Whymper's ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865), during which many major alpine peaks saw their first ascents. Joining the Alpine Club in 1857, Stephen made the first ascent, with various other climbers and usually in the company of his favorite Swiss guide Melchior Anderegg, of the following peaks: Wildstrubel, Bietschhorn, Rimpfischhorn, Alphubel, Blüemlisalphorn, Schreckhorn, Monte Disgrazia, Zinalrothorn, and Mont Mallet.

Social Theories of the Middle Ages

In this admirable introduction to medieval thought, Dom Jarrett deals in turn with the prevailing ideas concerning law, women, education, war, and other important manifestations of the era. The changing concept of education is traced as the university system grew, and the return to the classics in the mid-14th century set the state for the widening influence of Renaissance ideas. The ever fascinating topic of women is then taken under scrutiny. Dom Jarrett then goes into the effect of the Black Death on serfdom; the new developments in the art of war and the moral problems they raised; and the idea of Christendom itself, the background for all these social theories. Finally, medieval theories of art help us understand the social theories of the age in its appreciation of the artist as teacher like the theologian, the philosopher, and the scientist. In all these parts, Dom Jarrett brings to the reader the fruit of a lucid scholarship [and a sure knowledge of the medieval era. This task has been performed in a very complete and admirable way. Jarrett, Bede

Baron Friedrich von Hügel (5 May 1852-27 January 1925) was a Roman Catholic lay philosopher and writer. He never held an academic post nor did he ever earn a university degree. However, he is often mentioned alongside John Henry Newman as one of the most influential Catholic thinkers of his day. The scope of his learning was impressive and the list of his correspondents reads like a "who's who" of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century European religious leadership. When the University of Oxford granted him an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree in 1920, it was the first time since the Reformation that a Roman Catholic had been so honored by that university. Von Hügel was deeply engaged in theological discussions with major figures associated with the turn-of-the-century Modernist controversy. His scholarly concerns included the relationship of Christianity to history, ecumenism, mysticism, and the philosophy of religion.  Baron von Hügel is chiefly remembered as a guide and encourager of souls, especially through the posthumous publication of many of his letters: Selected Letters, 1896-1924, Letters from Baron Friedrich von Hügel to a Niece, Spiritual Counsels, and Letters of Baron Friedrich von Hügel. In addition to extensive correspondence, his published works included The Mystical Element of Religion, a study of Catherine of Genoa, Essays and Address (in two volumes) and The Reality of God, and Religion and Agnosticism. This last book, The Reality of God, includes what was to be the Gifford Lectures of 1924-1925 and 1925-1926 at Edinburgh University.
