Eastport. The first in-depth architectural look at Eastport, Maine, a small rural community of 1,300 people that is located at the easternmost coast of Maine on the Maine-New Brunswick border. It is a place that has been transitioning over the last several decades to a new future. Eastport's architecture reflects the shifting architectural styles of America. The book is not a guidebook but an evocation of place writ large. It is for anyone who has ties to Maine, loves architecture or small towns. It is for those interested in shifting local economies and border locations. This book testifies to the long-standing connections between Eastport and Canada, through trade, immigration, and culture. Through 175 photographs, Eastport, captures the shifting history of fisheries, commerce, transportation, and change to Eastport, Maine over time. More broadly, the book reflects many small towns today. For Canadians, the book should be of interest as the influence from Canada on Eastport's architecture runs deep. Eastport's border location made it a place of trade and commerce between the two nations. Photographer Thaddeus Holownia brought his skills and care to this place, making dozens of trips, in all seasons. With his trusty tripods and view cameras, he walked all over the island and visited with dozens of building owners who welcomed him in to see the interiors and virtues of their homes. Architect John Leroux grew up in New Brunswick and then studied, traveled and worked elsewhere in Canada and the U.S. before returning to New Brunswick. Six thematic essays by Leroux, take the reader on a journey into the broader physical soul of the city of Eastport. Like Holownia, he made numerous trips to this place, even appearing once in costume for the annual Pirate Festival held here in Eastport.

Celebrated as a triumphant collaboration between the American and Mexican governments, the damming of the Rio Grande in the early 1950s was expected to prove highly beneficial to the valley inhabitants of both countries. The success of this project, however, necessitated the gradual submersion of the colonial city of Guerrero beneath the water of the man-made reservoir. The inhabitants were uprooted and displaced, robbed of their land, their sense of community, their places of worship, study, and play—even their graves. Guerrero Viejo—simultaneously in Spanish and English text—is a haunting tale of power and priorities, of a place sentenced to die. Weaving oral interviews and personal investigation, Elena Poniatowska chronicles the historical and social development of Guerrero from its founding to its abandonment by all but a few residents.
