The Tree Who Walked Through Time - A Tree Identification Story is a children's picture book written by Maureen Carroll and lavishly illustrated by 18 artists who created realistic and fantastical replicas of trees. This book helps children identify different species of trees. This book is a flip book, a two-way tale, in that there are two books in one, with two front covers and no end. The Tree Who Walked Through Time is a story of an old Cottonwood tree who takes a stroll down memory lane, exploring the different trees that grow around him. The Cottonwood, named Prairie Prince, has a conversation with a boy who has fallen asleep under his branches. The other side of the book, The Boy Whose Branches Reached the Stars, is the story of a boy named Peter who is unhappy being short and longs to be tall like a tree. He goes on a stroll through the woods, exploring the different trees he might like to be, and eventually falls asleep underneath the old Cottonwood tree. Each artist contributed at least one tree to the book. As luck would have it, no two artists chose the same species! The artists' different styles and mediums highlight the unique qualities of each tree, helping the reader learn to distinguish the various species shown. Each contributing artist had a particular inspiration for selecting their tree. Along with their biographies you'll find in the book a brief description of why they chose the tree selected. Taliaferro and • Libby Tempero Author Maureen Carroll had never tried to herd cats before setting out to coordinate the work of seventeen other Kansas artists for The Tree Who Walked Through Time - A Tree Identification Story, but she has never known the meaning of the word "can't." A lover of rocks and trees since she was a little girl climbing in the Colorado Rockies, Maureen has worn many hats over the years, including linguist and cultural anthropologist, mom, public speaker, gluten-free cook, teacher, photographer, writer, graphic designer, and all-around Seeker of Truth. Maureen graduated from the University of Kansas and has taught classes throughout the United States and abroad. "I started by asking each artist to select a tree and to show something of what distinguishes that species of tree from others," Maureen explains. Serendipitously, no two artists chose the same tree. A few more were added along the way, including Jack Cleveland's fractal tree (which may grow wherever the human imagination wanders). "I wanted to introduce fine art to children, and to use that art to help them learn to identify different kinds of trees. Ultimately I wanted to serve the purpose of conservation by creating an emotional connection to the trees. My artists gave me more than I could have hoped for, which is wonderful because I wanted to help promote them, too." Motivation for this community effort to create a children's book was sparked by the recent cuts in funding to the arts and art education, particularly as it impacts children. "We were also motivated by our great love for trees and desire to aid tree conservation by increasing youths' understanding of trees." The author and artists are looking for book readers, tree lovers, and art supporters to aid in their cause of raising $25,000 for children's art education.

Photographer, Paratrooper, POW: A Wyoming Cowboy in Hitler's Germany tells the story of three brothers who leave their Wyoming home to fight in World War II. Carroll started with extensive, detailed family histories assembled by Merle Harris and other genealogists, and added the voluminous collection of military records, memorabilia, photographs, war-time correspondence, and personal notes saved by Harold Carroll, who, as the title suggests, was one of America's first paratroopers, a combat photographer, and a prisoner of war who escaped repeatedly from the Nazis.
The author supplements these extensive primary-source materials with meticulous research of other published and unpublished works, all fully documented and cited for the benefit of further research.
Carroll begins by reciting the story of the discovery, in 2004, of a treasure-trove of photographs Harold took and submitted for development, in England, just before D-Day. Before he had the chance to collect the prints, he parachuted into Normandy as part of the preliminary force, hours before the "official" start of the Allied invasion of Nazi Europe now well-known as "D-Day, H-Hour."
Harold was captured and taken prisoner by the Nazis and spent the remainder of the war repeatedly escaping from their POW camps, keeping notes of the adventures along the way, as he could - sometimes only in scratches upon his Zippo lighter. After the war, Harold put those notes together with accurate maps - unavailable while on the run from the Nazis! - to trace his various paths, with results differing from other, previously-published accounts. (Harold was certain that his version, first published here, was the more accurate version.) Yes, we get a picture of the trusty Zippo.
Carroll takes the reader back to the brothers' ancestral home in Ireland, painting a vivid chronical of classic American pioneers. The appendices document events at least as far back as 1798 but the main body of the text is limited to "seven generations" - from about 1860 - with the primary focus on the period from about 1931 through the end of WWII in 1945. Even with this limitation, the result is a sweeping saga of American history.
This 441-page book: Includes the tale of the massive Scots-Irish emigration from Ireland to Scotland, back to Ireland, thence to America. Describes family connections with Davey Crockett in Kentucky. Explores the contrast between the rampant American racial prejudice against Irish immigrants, on the one hand, and, on the other, the reality of Irish slave-owners in Georgia, before, during, and after the Civil War. Demonstrates the vivid truth, in this specific family, behind the story in Larry McMurty's Lonesome Dove - true cowboys of the American West, one set of Carrolls raised cattle in south Texas, rounded them up, and drove them 1500 miles north to Wyoming, stopping the migration to settle in Sheridan.
In 1914 Sheridan, two separate, unrelated Carroll clans - both Irish, but very different in history, experience, and politics - converged in marriage. Carroll and Carroll begot three lively boys. Each of the stories is a fascinating tale in its own right. To weave them together into one unified narrative, the author has inserted her own stories of what might have happened, always scrupulously faithful to the documented facts, but clearly set apart from the factual recitations. The result is an engaging tale, one that hold the reader's attention from beginning through end. Three boys went off to war; only two returned. Two brothers fought the Nazis in Europe; the other fought the Japanese from a submarine under the waters of the South Pacific. These are their stories.

Henry volunteers to leave the relative safety of his camp and travel from DaNang to the DMZ on a mission to get active-duty soldiers to put their signatures on insurance paperwork required by the US military. Many of the soldiers had left their Notification of Next of Kin forms blank; some put Mao Zedong and Ho Chi Minh down as their beneficiaries. Military command wanted the name of their next of kin, given their likelihood of dying in battle, and it is Henry’s job to find and convince them. Henry’s travels allow him, and the reader, to see how soldiers may cope with self-doubt, fear, loneliness, distrust of the Army and the government, and questions of morality. Henry takes us to a place we likely haven’t seen as we trudge with him and Monkey Jo through the jungle into enemy territory, surviving the devastated landscape created by Agent Orange, and visiting the makeshift compounds put up for the American soldiers to camp in. Most of all he takes the reader on a ride of addiction, giving a firsthand journey into the Army’s counter culture and how it affects the young men—saving some, destroying others. This is a story of awakening; of reaching rock bottom and finding redemption. It not only speaks to those who have children with disabilities and those who have lost a child, but also those who seek an amazing and surprising story of redemption and hope. In Searching for Spenser, Kramar explores how she was transformed through the experience of Spenser’s life and death. Writing became a creative outlet for her grief and allowed her to share her story with others. “Star Wars,” a chapter from Searching for Spenser, appeared in Echoes from the Prairie in 2013; “The Birthday Party,” another chapter, appeared in Exceptional Parent magazine in 2008, and a short story about Spenser was anthologized in Reading Lips: And Other Ways to Overcome a Disability published by Apprentice House in 2008. What makes a good parent? What defines success? How do we face loneliness and despair? Kramar searches for the answers to these questions after her son Spenser is diagnosed with Soto syndrome. She is forced to look honestly at her life as a single parent of two sons—one who is disabled, whom she fiercely loves. When she gives birth to her second child Spenser, who suffers from developmental delays, she is devastated because her life has centered on achievement. One day she comes home to a house with some of the furniture gone and the bank accounts emptied. After the divorce, Margaret struggles as a single mother. One spring day, while the other children are playing, Spenser clings to his mother at the school carnival because he is tired. She takes him to the hospital on a Sunday night, and in a startling turn of events, he dies the following Monday afternoon. After his death, Margaret questions whether she ever really knew her child. She searches for him in the memories of former teachers, relatives and friends, embarking on a journey that takes her beyond the grave, even to a psychic at Lily Dale, while she finds support and solace in the monthly meetings of The Compassionate Friends. A rollicking read and an eye-opening look at the Vietnam War from the perspective of a foot soldier. 
Henry’s story describes his rescue of a baby monkey, while on a dangerous mission, who becomes his faithful companion. Henry volunteers to leave the relative safety of his camp, and travel from DaNang to the DMZ on a mission to get active-duty soldiers to put their signatures on insurance paperwork required by the US military. This story is about the effects of drugs on soldiers uring wartime. Henry and Monkey Jo travel gathering stories and dispensing drugs. They interact with hooch maids, waitresses, drug dealers, remnants of the French colonizers, the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Regular Army. Along the way Henry records the stories of fellow GI’s and works to supply what he feels fellow soldiers need to survive in the surreal environment during the Vietnam War — including the next fix. 
Henry’s travels allow him, and the reader, to see how soldiers may cope with self-doubt, fear, loneliness, distrust of the Army and the government, and questions of morality. The Secret of the Magic Crystal

The Secret of the Magic Crystal is a book about friendship, imagination, and transformation. A somewhat selfish child, named Alana, finds an amazing, glowing crystal in the forest behind her house. That night she has a dream that she is a beautiful fairy. 
Alana is reluctant to share her magical crystal, but also desperately wants the attention that comes when someone is envious of you, so she shows it to her two best friends, Mae and Samara. They beg her to let them have it for a night, and she finally agrees. Mae takes the crystal home and has her own dream where she is a powerful sorceress. Next, Samara takes the crystal and dreams that she is a mermaid deep in a watery cave filled with treasure. Samara is enchanted by the glitter but the crystal shines a light towards the back of the cave where she sees an old octopus and he shows her a box with a riddle inside. The riddle tells of a mysterious light the octopus will guide them to. When she awakes, she knows that there was something special about the dream and that they must try and find a way to get back to the cave and continue on the journey that has been set before them. Meanwhile, back in the forest a group of city children, who are the victims of a bossy character named Kyron, have come to play. They glimpse an eerie light dash by them and they follow it only to barge in on the dreamy world of Alana, Mae, and Samara. Alana's fanciful dream fades away as if it had never existed in the first place. Only after Alana decides to open her heart and invite the group of city children into the world of the secret crystal does the magic truly begin! But how can all of the children share one crystal happily? They decide to seek the assistance of the old octopus from the cave, who offers them a final riddle, and an amazing out-of-this-world adventure! Mishea Obiji is an author, teacher, and artist. The Secret of the Magic Crystal was inspired by her love of art and creativity, married with her passion for communicating with children through a language they can understand, storytelling. Mishea has been teaching young children for more than 15 years and enjoys reading to them and playing on their level, and teaching them things that are integral to making the world a better, more loving place. Mishea has always loved art and creation of all kinds including drawing, painting, sculpture and fibers. She is passionate about drawing fantasy characters, and decided to try her hand at authoring her first children's book, The Secret of the Magic Crystal. Mishea was born in the country just outside of Lawrence Ks. where she spent her days exploring and day dreaming and trying to capture her fantasies in her drawings. Her Parents always encouraged her and gave her the resources to explore and practice. She continued with her art education and took art classes in college, but felt too confined and wanted to experience the art world in her own way. Mishea is married with one child, who she loves reliving her childhood through. Her husband is an entrepreneur and helps her understand the business side of marketing. She is grateful for a very supportive and creative circle of friends and family, and a wonderful publisher.
