The conference covers recent experimental and theoretical advances in the study of the nature of photons at high energy. These photons are studied at large particle accelerators, such as the LEP accelerator based in Geneva, Switzerland, and the HERA accelerator in Hamburg, Germany. The prospects for this work at planned future accelerators are also described.

The workshop brought together scientists working on the development of x-ray free-electron lasers and their applications. X-ray free-electron lasers produce high intensity, subpicosecond long, coherent, x-ray pulses, and will open a new frontier to study the structure of matter at the molecular and atomic level. Some fields of interest are structural changes in chemical reactions, single biological molecules, warm plasmas, nanosystems.

The Gamma-Ray Astrophysics 2001 Symposium offered the opportunity for participants to discuss important results from the nine years of operations of the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO), which ceased operations on June 4, 2000. Discussions also included new results from current missions such as HETE-II, Chandra, and XMM-Newton. In addition, results from ground-based VHE gamma-ray and radion observatories, and other ground-based and space missions related to high energy astrophysical sources were discussed. On the horizon, new gamma-ray space telescopies like GLAST, Swift, INTEGRAL, and AGILE will be launched in the next few years. Papers include mission capabilities and anticipated science from these upcoming missions.

The 2K1BC Workshop was a meeting of scientists from all over the world involved in cosmological observations in the millimetre wavelength range. Current and upcoming experiments were reported with present results and future forecasts: balloon borne projects which have detected the tiny temperature fluctuations in cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR), satellite programs that promise to give a clearer picture of observational cosmology, and ground-based observations which are the necessary complement to these projects. A separate section is devoted to the CMBR polarization that seems to be the main challenge in the near future. Particular attention was devoted to specific instrumental topics (optics, cryogenics, and detectors) and observational techniques.
