The coastal zone is one of the most dynamic environments on our planet and is much affected by global change, especially sea-level rise. Coastal environments harbour valuable ecosystems, but they are also hugely important from a societal point of view. The final chapter highlights strategies for coping with coastal change. We have many reasons to believe that the history of the development of the earth's crust is fundamentally dependent on processes in the upper mantle to a depth not exceeding 1000 km. Because of this relation, the Upper Mantle Project was organized as an international program of geophysical, geochemical, and geological studies concerning the 'upper mantle and its influence on the development of the earth's crust.' Many important results have emerged during the course of the Upper Mantle Project. Probably the most significant is the delineation in some detail of the 'fine structure'—the lateral and vertical variations of properties—of the upper mantle. These results have fully convinced us that there is a fundamental relation between this fine structure, the motions of materials in the upper mantle, and activities at or near the surface of the earth such as earthquakes (and the types of earthquake motions), volcanism, the building and deformation of mountains, and the differentiation of various rock types, including concentrations that are of economic interest.

All contributions represent the most recent findings in the theoretical and applied fields of satellite geodesy, including new instrumentation (satellite sensors and ground equipment) of potential use in satellite geodesy.The two preceding symposiums were held at Washington, D.C., in 1962 and at Athens, Greece, in 1965. The Proceedings of the first were published by North-Holland Publishing Company, Amsterdam, in 1963, and the Proceedings of the second by the National Technical University, Athens, in 1967. The prime mover behind both was George Veis, and his continuing dedication to this subject was in large measure responsible for scheduling this third symposium.

Since this provides the one opportunity for conventionality that the volume as a whole opens up, it would be churlish of me to decline. A preface normally includes, I am told, an indication of both the reason that underlies the volume's very existence and the individuals to whom the volume is directed. But part of the reason for the volume's existence lies, strange though it may seem, in communicating the reason for the volume's existence. Since prefaces generally go unread, I would be remiss if I attempted that communication here. Instead, I have left the attempt to the Introduction and Key, which I believe has a better chance of being read. Let us be willing to settle, for the moment, on the truly fundamental fact that the volume was prepared because I was prepared to prepare it and a publisher was prepared to publish it. As to the intended readers; they too, must wait for their identification in the Introduction and Key, unless they are willing to settle at this point on an identification as those who might be ready to read what I was prepared to prepare.

This is caused primarily by the existence of a wide variety of model users. Quantitative models may be purely empirical, that is based on data sets, semi-empirical, that is relying on physics whenever appropriate and available, but the "holes" being filled in with data as necessary, and finally purely physical models. It was apparent at the meeting that most current quantitative modeling efforts at this point in time are semi-empirical. This is partly because the physics of the magnetosphere is not yet entirely understood. At the same time, however, there is a large user community that needs models that can accurately describe magnetospheric features. The preponderance of semi-empirical models results because current data sets describing various magnetospheric features and processes are limited. There is some additional discussion of this topic in the section summaries. In particular, Cauffman in his introduction to the electric field section makes the useful distinction between "explanatory" and "representative" models. It is believed that all kinds of modeling will continue because of the various needs of the model user community.
