The Art of John Dahlsen. Take a journey through the eyes of John Dahlsen, as he tells his story and shares his art. A leader in the ﬁeld of environmental art throughout Australia, and in the US, Europe, and Asia. His art is considered highly collectible. An acclaimed public speaker, he has engaged audiences around the world. As an Australian environmental artist, he studied in Melbourne at the Victorian College of the Arts and did his teachers training at the Melbourne College of Advanced Education. In 2014 John lectures in Art at Charles Darwin University, where he is also doing his PhD in environmental art. He was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2014 from the Winston Churchill Foundation. John's work is reflective of this trend of environmentally responsive assemblage, situated at the intersection of works that utilize either natural or inorganic materials in their composition, and reflective of the social influence of environmental art. Sculptures using found and recycled materials, particularly materials that others would term as 'rubbish', such as plastics from drink containers, recontextualize these materials into the esthetic limelight, notably drawing attention when these works are displayed publicly, as is often the case when works are commissioned. While his work is not on the immersive scale of the Earthworks, the sheer size of the collection area for his materials is immense, and, like Smithson with the collected materials he termed 'Non-‐sites', the materials link back to the environments of their collection. The action of collecting these potentially hazardous materials from various beaches and interpreting them into artworks has both the ritualistic qualities of habitual collecting, as well as the ecologically conscious remediation of actively cleaning a site. Extending this ecological aspect is the conceptual process that occurs between artwork and viewer. Reflecting elements of social-‐sculpture, his sculptures, collages and installations invite the viewer to consider the ecology of the work, and invite a change in society's thoughts about the disposable nature of materials. The use of recognizable materials within a sculpture, such as thongs or bottles, has the effect of linking society not just with the artwork but also the concept that these items have been thrown away. In the use of casual clothing, as with his Thong Totems, 2000, the link is much more personal, as the item, in its former life as attire, has a physical connection with the wearer. Complementing his various works with inorganic materials, his works of driftwood also forge connections between the sculptural art world and the natural environment. Reminiscent of non-sites, these works, in the forms of totems, patterned assemblages and furniture; draw the viewer's mind back to the elements of the natural environment. Thus, through the works of artists like Dahlsen, various environmental and artistic concepts are realized, including a direct link with broader art history through the use of non-traditional materials, with emphasis on the ecological concepts underpinning the work rather than the decorative nature. Within environmental art, his works, like many environmental artists' practices, can be associated with a wide variety of interactions, and presents a distinctly unique conceptual element to the environmental art genre. Through Dahlsen's process of collecting, utilizing and exhibiting organic materials, we can see a link back to the roots of the environmental art movement and the early exhibitions. However, his uses of found synthetic materials are suggestive of the wider occurrences in art history and the utilization of traditional non-‐art materials, made allowable through the changes in conceptual art. I am an Orthodox Christian mother of five children. My first two children are vaccinated, three are not. My children without their shots are healthier with fewer colds, flu, ear infections, etc. When a sickness befalls them, it usually clears quickly. I do not support vaccination, and I do support holistic health—living whole and holy. Living holistically is a pro-life journey. The Orthodox Church is pro-life. I love the Church. Her Truth, Love, and Life saves us. The second edition of this book is endorsed by the Church with the intention to share the Truth with its followers. This book offers readers information to questions concerning fetal stem cells and vaccines, and it looks at this complicated issue in light of the whole person: body and soul. This work is timely, as the Holy Synod will soon convene to discuss vaccination. I have engaged this work prayerfully. Theotokos, save us! Some Christians vaccinate ignorant of the fact that fetal stem cells are used in the production of vaccines . Becoming Whole: Building Natural Immunity in the Body and Soul shares this fact and calls Christians, particularly the Orthodox Church, to reconsider vaccinating. Building natural immunity in the body and the soul profits the whole human person and pleases God. Back in 2001, the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church in America issued a statement that in no case is the use of fetal stem cells acceptable for Orthodox Christians. Furthermore, as defenders of the Giver of Life, the Church has a responsibility to continue its deliberations over the very meaning and value of human life. “We cannot, however, condone the manipulation of embryonic cells in any form for research purposes, including lines developed from destroyed embryos. Rather, we can only express dismay at the fact that the debate over this issue has avoided major considerations regarding the very meaning and value of human life.” People must realize that by vaccinating we are injecting fetal stem cells into our children at alarming rates, and as Orthodox Christians this violates a basic premise of our Faith. Steeped in deception from the start, it is not surprising that increasing vaccinations leads to wide-spread illnesses. Vaccines do not make one “immune” from disease. Vaccination compromises the immune system and leads to illness. It is not God’s will for one to vaccinate. It never was. The vaccine controversy is deep, and Orthodox Christians, among others, don’t know what to believe. Few people research the issue and instead ask their doctors, priests, and educated others for the answer. The culture has been led to believe that vaccines are life-saving. Generations have passed along this basic medical assumption, and so many do not question its erroneous belief. There are books that argue vaccination ultimately is not the way to wellness. There are older bodies of research such as Dr. Viera Scheibner’s Vaccination: 100 Years of Orthodox Research (1993), and more recent works such as: Vaccine Epidemic: How Corporate Greed, Biased Science, and Coercive Government Threaten Our Human Rights, Our Health, and Our Children, by Louise Kuo Habakus (2012); Dr. Suzanne Humphries’ Dissolving Illusions: Diseases, Vaccines, and the Forgotten History (2013); and Neil Miller’s Review of Critical Vaccine Studies: 400 Important Scientific Papers Summarized for Parents and Researchers (2016). In Becoming Whole: Building Natural Immunity in the Body and Soul, the main message is that the Orthodox Church provides a unique answer to this spiritual disaster of our times, an answer that is simple and natural: honor life. With the blessing of His Grace Bishop Paul Gassios of Chicago and the Midwest to share my message with Church, and adding to the prayers of the Orthodox Sisters at St. Paisius Monastery who are praying for “this much needed book,” I have hope in the Truth.

This book represents detailed accounts and facts witnessed by myself since the beginning of the foreign occupation war crimes that occurred in Fallujah, Iraq. It includes actual witness accounts of the war and the evidence of major war crimes that occurred during the Fallujah's occupation. It was not easy writing about these events. The pressure of terror and horror that we lived under during the occupation was insurmountable, especially with the accompanying human rights violations, daily crimes and assassinations. There were the defenders and journalists who documented and exposed these violations. Our mission, at first, as defenders of human rights, was limited to documenting the war, with evidence of violations, and sending it to international organizations like the United Nations, as well as the world press. The accountability of the perpetrators may have been a fantasy at that time, but at least the documentation will preserve the rights of the people, since there is no statute of limitations for these crimes. For this, I publish all these accounts to expose the cover-up and inform the international community of the lack of confidence in the higher institutions of the UN. This book contains a lot of evidence supported through three different sources, the United Nations, non-governmental organizations and government documents issued by those governments. It makes use of audio-visual media, as well as formal confessions. All of these documented evidences, as well to my personal testimony are events that took place during that period. I like to recall the wise words of the bold Italian journalist Sigfrido Ranucci, producer of the Italian film documentary: Fallujah: the Hidden Massacre. When asked by Al-Jazeera whether he intended his film to charge American’s use of prohibited weapons in spite of Italy being an American ally, he responded, “The intent is not to accuse the Americans, but if we are talking about democracy, we must seek the truth and honesty in a scientific manner”.

Child Mining in an Era of High-Technology: Understanding the Roots, Conditions, and Effects of Labor Exploitation in the Democratic Republic of Congo

This book is about “child labor exploitation.” The book argues that mining work is one of the worst forms of child labor because the working conditions in the mines are harmful to the health, safety, education, and development of child miners. It also contends that a combination of factors drives children to work in the artisanal mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). These variables include poverty; adult unemployment; lack of educational opportunities; sociocultural conditions; lack of law enforcement; and globalization with its high demand for mined minerals and cheap labor. The book also alleges that child miners in the DRC contribute significantly in the production of a variety of raw minerals, such as cobalt, coltan, and tin, which are used in the process of fabrication cell phones, computers and other modern electronics. For example, children involved in cobalt mining in the DRC produce about 7.5% of the world’s total production of cobalt. The employers and corporations that source minerals from child miners reap high profits while paying children extremely low wages. The book concludes by suggesting the adoption of a comprehensive approach to eradicate child mining labor in the DRC. This includes the reduction of poverty, the creation of alternative opportunities for child miners, the enforcement of free education in remote mining areas, the prosecution of child labor-exploiters, the traceability of mined minerals, and public awareness-raising on the slavery-like situation of child miners. Some of these strategies have been adopted in countries that previously had a high prevalence of child labor, such as Brazil, Kenya, and the Philippines. As a result, the prevalence of child labor significantly decreased in those countries.
