"Pasar," or Malay for marketplace, is chosen as an adjective to distinguish the Singapore/Malaysia patois from similar language forms that abound in countries all over the world where English or another European language came into everyday contact with the local languages and, from such a fusion, over the decades, a uniquely local form of language emerged. The collection of words and phrases in this book forms an important part of the cultural landscape of Malaysia and Singapore --- they have their roots in the local Chinese dialects, Malay and English.
