Description:

This is the third book in a series of studies of political, labour and economic developments by this author and covers the period from 1945 to 1955. His earlier books covered the period 1936 to 1939 (Rise and Organize) and that from 1938 to 1944 (Towards Decolonisation). This book is mainly concerned with Jamaica but gives some attention to political developments in Trinidad and Tobago and British Guiana, and discussions on Federation of the British West Indies. It is written by a participant in political party and trade union activities in these then British colonies and is the only such study by an 'insider'. The author has drawn on his personal knowledge and experience, on records preserved in his own extensive personal archives, on current newspaper reports and on items in the files of the British Government's Colonial Office available in the Public Record Office. This study is an important addition to material available to teachers and students concerned with political, constitutional and labour developments in the English-speaking Caribbean region and will be informative for the general reader on these subjects.
