Under the Yoke

Under the Yoke is Bulgaria’s most celebrated historical novel, written by the country’s most beloved author. It is a tale of the bloody uprising of 1876, when Bulgarian patriots fought to free Bulgaria from 500 years of Ottoman rule. The book is filled with action, as well as romance, tragedy and humor and may well remind the reader of Vazov’s contemporary, Mark Twain, especially with respect to the humor and the author’s observations about the human condition. In this newly edited English version, supplemental historical and background material has been added to the best from past editions to produce a book that will be read for both pleasure and study.
