This report presents the conclusions of a Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee convened to evaluate the safety of residues of certain veterinary drugs in food and to recommend maximum levels for such residues in food. The first part considers conslusions on specific toxicological end-points lipid-soluble residues of veterinary drugs with MRLs in milk statistical methods for the estimation of MRLs and the Committee's review and comments on documents provided by Codex Committees. Summaries follow of the Committee's evaluations of toxicological and residue data on a variety of veterinary drugs: five antibacterial agents (cefuroxime chloramphenicol flumequine lincomycin pirlimycin) four insecticides (cyhalothrin cypermethrin and a-cypermethrin doramectin phoxim) and two production aids (melengestrol acetate ractopamine). The Committee's comments on chloramphenicol found at low levels in animal products are also summarized. Annexed to the report is a summary of the Committee's recommendations on these drugs including acceptable daily intakes and proposed maximum residue limits.
