Description:

In 1909 the Dutch banker and patron of the arts David van Buuren took up residence in Brussels. Over the next 30 years, he would build an impressive art collection--housed in an Art Deco villa amidst magnificent gardens--as his career in the center of the financial world played out against the backdrop of some of the most significant social, economic and political developments of the twentieth century. After his death, van Buuren's wife, Alice, continued the legacy her husband had begun; in 1970, she bequeathed the house, gardens and art collection to a foundation which became the van Buuren Museum. This unique volume provides stunning photographs of the rare furniture, carpets and stained-glass windows of the villa, which was built in the style of the Amsterdam school; sculptures and paintings spanning five centuries--including works by the Flemish and Italian Old Masters, Rembrandt, Guardi, Fantin-Latour, Ensor, Van Gogh, Signac, Van Dongen, Foujita, Ernst, Permeke, Wouters and Desmet; and the nearly four-acre garden. Isabelle Anspach, Curator of the van Buuren Museum, contributes a text to this richly illustrated publication.
