Tuscany is the native land of history. Not because its history might be more important than that of other regions in the world or in Italy, but because events seem to have an almost fateful, indelible permanence there. The landscape, the vine rows, the trees, that same light of the sky, all nourish the human memory: wars, dominations, figures from art, poetry, social institutions, civilizing genius. God created the earth, but Tuscany was created a second time by men. In no other place in the world as in Tuscany does one have the certain preception that time has never stopped. Like a river that carries away in its waters that which, bit by bit, it collects from mountain tributaries or from those near its basin, it accumulates the traces of its passing. Even the solitude in Tuscany is an inhabited solitude.
