Esta es la primera novela escrita por Luis Goytisolo despues de Antagonia. Los primeros capitulos nos ofrecen diversos aspectos de la vida de A, un hombre que en todos los terrenos ha conseguido siempre lo que se ha propuesto. Solo un problema: la frustracion de sus impulsos creadores, el sacrificio de su antigua vocacion literaria en aras de su posicion social. Una preocupacion que parece ir en aumento segun progresa el relato y A se entrega a la redaccion de sus anotaciones y a la evocacion de los recuerdos -cada vez mas lejanos- que aparece otra, no formulada explicitamente pero no por ello menos profunda: la dificultad de establecer la linea que separa la locura de la cordura. Elementos que, poco a poco, trocaran el desenfado inicial del relato en un impreciso, y por ello aun mas desazonante, clima de inquietud. / The first chapters of the novel offer up diverse aspects of the life of A, a man who in all environments has always managed (almost without trying) to achieve what he intends to. There is just one problem: the frustration of his creative impulses, the sacrifice of his old literary vocation in exchange for his social and economic position. This worry seems to grow as the story continues and A devotes himself to the writing of notes and the evocation of his (increasingly distant) memories that are generated by the examination of his life. Parallel to this worry, another appears, not explicitly formulated but no less profound: the difficulty of establishing the line that separates madness from sanity. These elements, little by little, transform the initial ease of the story into an imprecise, and therefore more upsetting, climate of anxiety.
