Zama (Alfaguara Hispanica) (Spanish Edition)

Set in the 1790s, when Argentina was still a Spanish colony, this novel, nevertheless is addressed to the present. Diego de Zama had a judge, the leader who put down an Indian rebellion without shedding a drop of Spanish blood, who imparted justice without recourse to the sword. The story is told in a straightforward fashion, with no attempt to imitate the baroque language and manners of the time. Zam's wait and the author's wait while incarcerated as a subversive are recognized in the dedication:"To all those who wait."
