Sketches By Hootum The Owl: Satirist's View of Colonial Calcutta
Description:
It is 1860s Calcutta. After a hundred years of East India Company rule, the signs of dissent against foreign domination are discernible: the Mutiny of 1857 and from 1860 the Indigo Revolt the peasants resistance against forced cultivation of indigo. The Revolt is in the form of a sustained campaign, especially after an English translation of the play Nildarpan leads to the trial and sentencing of Reverend James Long.
