Unique Landscape won the 9th Mao Dun Literary Prize in 2015. During the 1960s and 1970s, Wang Meng was transferred to the countryside in Xinjiang and created this full-length novel. Due to various reasons, it was not published, but mentioned in Autobiography of Wang Meng and various versions of critical biographies. Therefore, this is a novel which has been heard of long before but hasn't been published. The novel is set against the background of the countryside in Xinjiang Province; starting from the food burglary in the commune, the book uncovers suspenses one after another and reveals the local conditions and customs, presenting a panorama of the modern life in the Western Region. Meanwhile, the novel reflects the true life of people of Han and Uyghur nationalities under the special historical background as well as their mutual understanding and friendly coexistence; it tells the grave history, but also vividly creates the characters in daily life. The suspenses come out one by one, and the conflicts are focally integrated; besides, there is distinctive Xinjiang flavor, marvelous plot, as well as witty and humorous language. The novel shows great originality by designing "Words of the novelist" after each chapter, which comments on and explains the creation and thinking of 39-year-old Wang Meng from the perspective of the current 79-year-old Wang Meng; therefore, the 79-year-old Wang Meng converses with the 39-year-old Wang Meng, which adds to the modernity of the work written in the 1960s and 1970s.
