Herbert Brandl
Description:
This is an impressive exhibition catalog of the work of the much honored Austrian painter Herbert Brandl, two years after his international success in the Austrian Pavilion at the 2007 Venice Biennale. For many years, Brandl, who comes out of the Hamburg School painting tradition, has worked in large formats, sometimes diptychs and triptychs, applying paint to canvas thickly and dynamically. The motif of Alpine scenery plays a crucial role in his work, which often straddles the line between abstraction and figuration. The paintings featured in this major exhibition seem to be influenced by the intense global turmoil created by the 2008 economic collapse. Includes almost 50 double-page color illustrations.
