At the center of Cahn’s oeuvre are several recurring motifs that the artist defined very early on in her practice. Although in no way a closed set — additions or alterations do occur — these motifs remain bound to representations of the self and the exterior as its correlative part, the inner and the outer space, the homely and the un-homely, the human and the inhuman, the steady flow of history and the catastrophic rupture of the present, and, finally, and most overarchingly, the feminine and the masculine, which is the general antinomy that structures all the subsequent ones.
