Her love and devotion to Lafayette was such that she was prepared to risk her life for him when he returned from fighting in the American Revolution. They experienced the horrors of the French Revolution and its Reign of Terror, when Lafayette had to flee Paris, but was caught outside Paris, and Adrienne (Madame de Lafayette) was later also imprisoned for several years.
