Bookish, bespectacled Vita Carew longs to be in her room pursuing her study of science, but her aunt has other plans, and insists they go to a gala dinner at Pemberton Hall. An internationally celebrated and glamorous German opera singer is to perform, and the grandest of company will enjoy a sumptuous dinner marking the household’s return to high society after a terrible run of misfortune.
But Vita soon notices all is not well at the Hall. When disaster strikes as the seafood is served, only she and a visiting German doctor are on hand to offer first aid. Worse still, Vita realises the inconvenient death of a member of staff has been covered up to avoid interrupting the carefully planned soirée.
Vita and the German doctor are left to delve into the hidden undercurrents at the grand country house, and work out who is to blame, but can they do so in time to prevent the poisoner striking again?
