Vt Milites DicVntVr: A Dictionary of Roman Military Terms and Terminology (Per Lineam Valli)

Who was the praefectus castrorum? What was a vinea? Would a Roman soldier know what the term ‘lorica segmentata’ meant? Ut Milites Dicuntur is a dictionary of terms frequently used by and about the Roman army. Each entry is fully referenced to show contemporary examples of usage (where they exist) and draws widely on the literature, military documents, and inscriptions of the Romans themselves for its sources. Modern coinages (of which – like lorica segmentata – there are surprisingly many) are clearly indicated as such. Each entry includes grammatical details (such as gender or a plural form, if a Latin noun), an Anglicised form if it exists, whether the term is a modern coinage, as well as the definition itself, with any subsidiary and associated definitions. Sources for the use of the term are provided from as wide a range of documents as possible and, finally, one pertinent modern source is provided for further reading purposes. The volume is completed with lists of commonly used abbreviations of terms found on inscriptions, a list of useful online resources, a bibliography, and a series of topical indexes.
