International Criminal Procedure: Towards a Coherent Body of Law

Half a century after the closure of the Nuremberg and Tokyo Tribunals, the 1990s saw the beginning of a rapid growth of in the number international/internationalized criminal tribunals with the establishment of the ICTY and the ICTR. The trend has since continued unabated with the establishment of the ICC and the emergence of tribunals set up to try perpetrators of international crimes in Sierra Leone, East Timor, Cambodia and the soon to be unveiled, the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. Though much of the academic and diplomatic focus has been on substantive aspects of international criminal justice, the body of procedural rules has continued to evolve away from the spotlight and has been no less instrumental in the delivering of justice. International Criminal Procedure: Towards a Coherent Body of Law is a collection of papers from the expert meeting convened by Amsterdam Center of International Law (ACIL) of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) in January 2008. The collection brings together renowned experts in international criminal law to discuss the prospects of, and challenges to, the progressive development of international criminal procedure towards a principled and uniform body of law.
