South from Ephesus: An Escape from the Tyranny of Western Art

Suddenly weary of the tyranny of Western European art, Brian Sewell first visited Turkey in 1975. Delighted by the unexpected wealth of Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Islamitic cultures there, he returned three of four times a year until 1990.

This book is based on his early journeys in Aegean Turkey following in teh footsteps of early nineteenth-century travellers, some of them responsible for finding great treasures.

Sewell paints and exotic and idiosyncratically researched picture of ancient Asia minor, its influence on European culture and its modern inhabitants, self-mocking and autobiographical.
