Gabriele Munter: The Search for Expression 1906-1917

Gabriele Munter (1877-1962) was one of the most important German Expressionist artists of the early twentieth century. Her radical and experimental approach to painting revitalised the genres of portraiture, landscape and still life. She achieved a distinct voice within the cross-currents of European modernism. Today, however, Munter's work is largely unknown outside Germany, her reputation eclipsed by male contemporaries such as her partner Wassily Kandinsky.
Gabriele Munter: The Search for Expression 1906-1917 focuses on the most intensively creative period of her career, when she took what she later described as 'a great leap' - away from Impressionism into a bold and brightly coloured Expressionism. Here more than fifty key works are reproduced, with essays by leading experts, Annegret Hoberg providing an outline introduction and Shulamith Behr discussing her role as 'more than a Muse' in German Expressionism.
