Gregory Howard's Story

War Comes to Virginia! Gregory stood rooted to the hall floor as soldiers streamed into the parlor and the sitting room. their boots tracking dirt over the rugs. He saw that Father had moved to block the doorway of the dining room, but several of the soldiers simply pushed him in ahead of them. Gregory heard a chair scrape the floor as it was pushed back, followed by a harsh northern voice saying, "You sit back down, rebel lady. You ain't goin' nowhere."
