Description:
Prepared in conjunction with the September 1999 Hunter College exhibition. Arranged chronologically, the text and illustrations follow Giulio's development as a draftsman from his youthful years at the papal court in Rome through his two decades as artistic entrepreneur at the Gonzaga court. Most of the drawings are from the Mantuan period and are arranged according to different types of projects that the artist designed. The exhibition explores Giulio's versatility, his inventiveness, speed and facility, and his ability to simultaneously recall and transform motifs from antique sculpture into a modern decorative language. It also emphasizes his different types of drawings and his workshop practice. Contains 44 b&w drawings and three prints. Cox-Rearick is professor of art history at Hunter College and the Graduate School CUNY. Oversize: 10x12
