Birkmann served as President of the Southern and the Texas Districts of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod during significant years of their early development. As son-in-law of Wendish pioneer, the Rev. Jan Kilian, and as step-father of LCMS president the Rev. John Behnken, D.D., the Rev. G. Birkmann, D.D., had a career spanning distant eras of Lutheran history in Texas.
