David Silverberg is the worst bar mitzvah student in all of recorded Jewish history. No one can teach him until his father takes him to Rabbi Reuven Weiss, a mechanic and a rebel. This novel is the story of how they change each other s lives and how David grows to become a bar mitzvah. That was David's plan. He had silently promised himself to frighten off any Bar Mitzvah teachers that came his way, to make sure that he did not learn a thing for his Bar Mitzvah. Now that he had managed to scare off his fifth Bar Mitzvah teacher in a row, it seemed to David that his plan was proceeding well. Even so, while sitting on the living room couch, watching his father slumped in sorrow by the dining room table, David was beginning to have mixed feelings.
