From Introduction: "Madeira applique originated on the island of Madeira in Portugal. It involves stitching a fabric onto another fabric. By hand, the raw edges are turned under andthe folded edge is stitched downusing the Point de Paris stitch. Here, we have adapted it so that it can be done on the sewing machine.
