Men and women of revolutionary France, 1789--1871. This book presents two main themes: the birth, in the French Revolution of 1789, of an on-going tradition of democracy and equality, and the transformation of the French working class from a pre-industrial sporadic force to a conscious and organized political movement, a process completed by the end of the nineteenth century.
