Novalis: Hymns to the Night

This, the great mystic work of Georg Phillip Friedrich von Hardenberg, the early German romantic poet known as `Novalis', was written between 1797 and 1800. No English translation of it has appeared for many years. In his conclusion Gascoyne writes: The Hymns are an expression of spontaneous faith without parallel in the contemporary world.
