Ine, The First King of Wessex

This concise history argues that the election of Ine as King of Wessex in 688 is evidence that the unification of the region was generally more peaceful than has been traditionally believed and that the transition from Roman to Saxon Britain was less combative. Gibbs suggests that Ine's reign rivalled that of the more famous Alfred, when both Saxons and native Romano-Britons alike enjoyed a period of culture, education and spirituality.
