When Annie Jackson's mother re-marries, the move to her new step-father's detached house in the 'posh' part of Leeds brings an end to her carefree childhood. Leonard Spode appears to be a loving husband and father, but behind closed doors he reveals his true colours. Bravely attempting to expose Spode for the monster he is, Annie is branded a trouble maker and sent to a children's home - and discovers she is pregnant.
