About the AuthorDerek Doyle is a retired consultant physician, his speciality palliative medicine. He began his career as a medical missionary in Africa, then returned to Scotland to spend twenty years working in a renowned hospice, lecturing in Edinburgh University, helping to establish the new speciality of which he was a pioneer, and being a guest professor or lecturer in North America, Europe and the Far East. He is a Fellow of four medical Royal Colleges, was appointed OBE for his work, and has written or edited many books including the prestigious Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine. He is married and lives in Edinburgh.
