Excellence in Higher Education

Excellence in an expanding system, the creation of excellence through teaching and learning, the impact of globalization on concepts of quality and excellence, education and research for excellence, and the assessment of excellence are among the themes addressed by the 18 papers. The symposium, co-sponsored by the Academia Europaea and the International Academy of Education, drew education theorists from Europe, both Americas, and Australia. Among specific topics are the von Humboldt legacy and the contemporary European university, enhancing teaching-learning environments to encourage deep learning, and countries in transition facing globalization.
