The foremother of home economics, Catharine Beecher did much to change assumptions about the place of women in American society. She was also a very considerable philosopher and social theorist. These volumes, dating back to 1831, encompass her writings on the subjects of moral philosophy, common sense and religion, cause and effect, the role of women at home and in the workplace, and her anti-suffrage position.
