Description:
The skill of calligraphy and lettering can be adapted to link with many other craft interests. It can play a vital role in poster and book design and even in embroidery projects. This book aims to teach the basic skills and their practice and usage in many forms. Covering the whole field of lettering, calligraphy and illumination, this book ranges from the equipment required, constructional techniques, visual planning and removing mistakes to the intelligent use of colour. It also gives general hints on transferring or enlarging artwork, determining margins and mounting a finished piece of work. The book is produced entirely from the hand-lettered page and illustrated throughout. Joan Freeman's work includes designs for ecclesiastical embroidery, in particular for York Minster, St Albans Abbey and Durham Cathedral. She has designed book jackets and record sleeves and wood engraving illustrations for two Folio Society books, "The Mabinogion" and "The Wandering Scholars".
