Description:
Reviewing topics such as construction, freight handling, multimode transportation, multiuse of ports including tourism, ergonomics and environmental, financial and legal aspects, this book contains the 31 papers presented at the first Maritime Engineering in Ports conference, held in Italy in September, 1998. The book discusses the management, operation, design and building of maritime works and ports, a field of transport engineering that has experienced rapid changes for several years. Because it is essential that new technologies are incorporated into a better design of these port systems in order for industry to remain competitive, the University of Genoa in Italy and the Wessex Institute of Technology of the UK decided to convene an international conference in September 1998. The meeting, which was co-sponsored by the Italian Association of Ports and the port, Authority of Savona, was held in Genoa.
