From the hungry days following the defeat of World War I, these citizens prospered under their saviour Adolf Hitler - before he led them into a new war, thus bringing them both adventure and tragedy. From the Home Front to the grim realities of the U-boat war, from war-torn skies to the endless plains of the Russian Front, every one of them became enmeshed in the struggle. Of special interest are: the tales of German women at war, the "WAAFs" of the Luftwaffe; the Youth Leader whose ambitions propelled her into the SS and espionage; the uncanny escape of Fraulein Brockhaus in the first RAF "1000-bomber" raid; and the account of the plain cook recruited by the Gestapo.
