Ken Roy, who has led a simple and conflict-free life for sixty-six years, retires from the only place he has ever worked. Along with the recent deaths of his wife and lifelong best friend, Ken finds himself in an unforeseen and challenging phase. He volunteers at a hospital, where he befriends a patient, Rhaymi Summers. Following a one-car accident involving Rhaymi, and after speaking with an experienced counselor at the hospital, Ken suspects her boyfriend is abusing the college-aged woman. A short time later, Rhaymi arrives at Ken's house unannounced and injured. Ken convinces Rhaymi to attend a support group for abuse victims. Rhaymi is unexpectedly absent from the meeting, while Ken learns of the many evils of being in an abusive relationship.After rescuing a desperate Rhaymi one evening, Ken is erroneously jailed by her boyfriend's father, a powerful police captain. With the help of his neighbor, the Editor-in-Chief of the city's newspaper, Ken is released, but not before Rhaymi's continued demise, which ultimately determines the fate of Ken's future.
