On the radar of Major League Baseball scouts, Ed Adams, a standout high school hitter from Penn Hills, Pa., headed south in 1977 to play Division I baseball for the University of South Carolina. In his sophomore year, a passion for food that he could not control took hold. He struck out, leaving his dreams in the dust of the baseball diamond. As he gained and lost hundreds of pounds, the soul of an athlete remained and drove him to fight his demons time and time again.
