Michael Davitt was born the son of poor farmers during the Great Famine. When his family were thrown out of their home by their landlord, they went to England to survive. At nine years old, Michael had to work in a factory and suffered a terrible accident there. But a wealthy man heard of this and paid for him to go back to school. When Michael grew up her joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood which wanted Home Rule for Ireland. But closest to Michael s heart was the suffering of the farmers in Ireland who were at the mercy of cruel landlords. Back in Ireland, he founded the Land League which, through peaceful protest, changed the lives of the Irish people forever.
