The Works of Li Po: Centenary Bilingual Edition

This book is a centenary reissue of Shigeyoshi Obata’s noted translation of Li Bai, (earlier known as Li Po in English), originally published in 1922. Obata’s text is presented in its entirety but we have added supplementary material. The editor's foreword includes a brief biography of the translator, and will also touch on Li Bai. An updated reading list is provided. We have also updated the original text’s Wade-Giles transcriptions, used in the English translation mainly for proper names, to today’s standard pinyin.
Most importantly, we are adding the original Chinese text of the poems and biographies, in traditional characters, on facing pages. Anyone wishing to delve deeper into the translation will conveniently be able to do so.
