Sense and Sensibility
Description:
The novel opens with the death of Mr. Henry Dashwood, whose estate by law is left to the son of his first wife, John Dashwood. His current wife and three daughters, Elinor, Marianne, and Lucy, are forced to turn their home over to John and his awful wife. As they search for a new residence, they endure an uncomfortable cohabitation with John and his wife. The mood in the house changes when John's brotherinlaw, Edward Ferrars, comes for an extended visit. Edward cheers up the young and bereft Lucy and forms an intimate bond with Elinor, the oldest, most sensible daughter. However, Edward is the heir to his family's fortune and Elinor realizes that she, a woman of no wealth, could never be a true object of Edward's affection. Mrs. Dashwood and her daughters are invited to live with generous relatives, who provide them with a snug cottage. During a walk, Marianne, the impetuous and passionate sister, falls and hurts her ankle. She is rescued by the handsome and equally passionate John Willoughby, and they begin a public flirtation that causes more than one raised eyebrow. Marianne finds herself headoverheels in love while Elinor pines for Edward Ferrars. Then, Willoughy suddenly leaves for London, and Marianne is heartbroken. When Elinor and Marianne are invited to England with relatives, they are both hopeful their respective paths will once again cross with both Edward and Willoughby. Will the sensible and serious Elinor reveal her true feelings for Edward? Will the passionate Marianne reign in her enthusiastic infatuation? As always, Austen offers a sharp critique of stringent and inequitable English culture while giving us a truly memorable narrative.
